Why people feel disconnected from their personal style
A lot of people think they do not have style.
In reality, most people are simply overwhelmed by aesthetics.
We are constantly consuming inspiration from everywhere at once — TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube. Every platform is filled with people who seem to have perfected their look, their wardrobe, and their identity.
You see an outfit online and think:
That looks amazing.
Then you try something similar on yourself and suddenly it feels… wrong.
Not because the outfit is bad.
Not because you are doing something wrong.
But because inspiration does not automatically translate into identity.
We have all experienced it.
Pinterest Is Not Real Life
Pinterest is beautiful. That is the point of it.
But a beautiful image does not automatically mean a beautiful reality for you.
There are outfits I absolutely love online that would never work for:
- my body type
- my lifestyle
- or even the climate I live in
And that matters more than people think.
Aesthetic without functionality quickly becomes costume.
Instead of copying entire looks, pay attention to what you are actually drawn to.
Is it:
- the color palette?
- the silhouette?
- the textures?
- the attitude of the outfit?
Take the elements that resonate with you and reinterpret them in a way that works for your life.
That is where personal style starts becoming personal.
Style Confusion vs. Identity Confusion
A lot of style confusion is actually identity confusion.
When you do not fully understand:
- what suits you
- what feels authentic to you
- or how you want to present yourself
…everything starts blending together.
This is why understanding your own features can be helpful. Not as rules, but as guidance.
Understanding Your Body Type
Body types are simply general categories of how a body is proportioned. They are not limitations. They are tools that can help create balance and harmony in styling.
Apple Shape
Weight is carried more around the midsection and upper body, often with slimmer legs and hips.
Pear Shape
Weight is carried more in the hips, thighs, and lower body, with a narrower upper body.
Hourglass Shape
Bust and hips are relatively balanced with a defined waist.
Rectangle Shape
Shoulders, waist, and hips are similar in width, creating a straighter silhouette.
Inverted Triangle
Broader shoulders and chest with narrower hips, commonly seen in athletes and swimmers.
None of these are “better” than the others. They simply affect how clothing interacts with your proportions.
Finding Your Color Palette
Color analysis can also help create clarity.
Different tones naturally harmonize with different skin tones, eye colors, and hair colors. The goal is not to limit yourself, but to understand which colors naturally bring balance and brightness to your features.
Spring
Warm undertones with light, fresh, bright colors:
peach, coral, warm pink, mint, cream, turquoise.
Summer
Cool undertones with softer, muted colors:
dusty rose, lavender, cool blue, sage, soft gray.
Autumn
Warm undertones with deep earthy tones:
olive, rust, mustard, chocolate brown, terracotta.
Winter
Cool undertones with high contrast and bold colors:
black, white, emerald, royal blue, icy tones, hot pink.
A simple starting point is the gold versus silver test:
- Gold tends to flatter warmer undertones
- Silver tends to flatter cooler undertones
Then look at whether muted or high-contrast colors bring more life to your features.
Defining Your Own Visual Language
Once you start understanding yourself better, inspiration becomes easier to filter.
You stop saving everything.
You stop chasing every aesthetic.
You stop feeling exhausted every time you open your closet.
Instead, you begin building a wardrobe with harmony — pieces that actually work together and feel like an extension of you.
Personal style is not about perfectly recreating someone else’s life online.
It is about creating a visual language that reflects your own.
Because the goal is not to look like everyone else.
It is to finally look the way you feel.
